Rendezvousing with location-aware devices: Enhancing social coordination
نویسندگان
چکیده
Emerging technologies such as location-awareness devices have the potential to significantly impact users’ social coordination, particularly while rendezvousing. It is important that we explore how new technologies influence social behaviours and communication in order to realize their full potential. This paper presents a field study investigating the use of mobile location-aware devices for rendezvous activities. Participants took part in one of three mobile device conditions (a mobile phone, a location-aware handheld, or both a mobile phone and a location-aware handheld) and completed three rendezvousing scenarios. The results reveal key differences in communication patterns between the mediums, as well as the potential strengths and limitations of location-aware devices for social coordination. The paper concludes with a discussion of relevant design issues drawn from observations gathered during the field study. q 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Exploring the Behavioural Effect of Location-Awareness within the Social Context of Rendezvousing
This paper presents an exploratory field study investigating the behavioral effects of mobile location-aware computing within the social context of rendezvousing. We introduce a study where participants took part in one of three mobile device conditions (a mobile phone, a location-aware handheld or both a mobile phone and a location-aware handheld) and completed three different rendezvousing sc...
متن کاملPush Technologies for Enhancing Awareness and Coordination
10/1/99 Page 1 ABSTRACT This paper examines the interfaces and potential social impacts of a variety of push technologies. Push technologies are designed to make users aware of information. If this information concerns coworkers or shared tasks, then the resulting awareness can improve the coordination of work. This paper examines how a variety of systems accomplish this: what kinds of informat...
متن کاملA Diary Study of Rendezvousing: Group Size, Time Pressure and Connectivity
This paper reports an initial analysis of a diary study of rendezvousing as performed by university students. The study’s tentative findings are: (i) usability ratings for communication services are a little worse during a rendezvous (when at least one person is en route) than before (when none have yet departed); (ii) problems rendezvousing caused more stress when the rendezvousing group was l...
متن کاملUrban Enclave Location-Aware Social Computing
Urban enclaves have richly interconnected social and physical geographies, much of which is hidden from casual observation. As a result, interpersonal collaboration, coordination, and socio-physical navigation is often suboptimal. We are exploring how ubiquitous social computing applications that seamlessly provide location-aware information about people and places could help address this situa...
متن کاملTowards a location and mobility-aware routing protocol for improving multimedia streaming performance in MANETs
The increasing availability and decreasing cost of mobile devices equipped with WiFi radios has led to increasing demand for multimedia applications in both professional and entertainment contexts. The streaming of multimedia however requires strict adherence to QoS levels in order to guarantee suitable quality for end users. MANETs lack the centralised control, coordination and infrastructure ...
